FINE LINES AND WRINKLES
What are fine lines and wrinkles?
As we age, fine lines are one of the first visible signs of the skin’s aging process. These lines form as a result of several factors, including repetitive facial movements, sun exposure, and a decline in the skin's natural ability to repair itself. Over time, these fine lines can deepen into wrinkles, leading to a less youthful appearance.
Repetitive Facial Movements
Every time we make facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting, or raising our eyebrows, the muscles beneath the skin contract and cause temporary folds. In youth, the skin bounces back after these movements, but with age, the skin becomes less elastic.
Over time, these dynamic wrinkles—such as crow's feet around the eyes, frown lines between the eyebrows, and forehead lines—become more permanent because the skin’s ability to “snap back” is diminished.
Sun Exposure
UV rays from the sun break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Collagen provides the skin with structure and firmness, while elastin helps it maintain its shape and bounce back after movement. As the skin’s collagen and elastin degrade due to UV exposure, the skin loses its firmness and flexibility, making it more prone to wrinkles and sagging.
Sun damage is often the most significant contributing factor to premature aging and fine lines. Without proper sun protection, signs of aging can appear much earlier.
Reduced Skin Elasticity and Collagen Production
As we age, collagen production naturally slows down, beginning as early as our mid-20s. Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure and firmness. Elastin fibers, which help skin snap back into place after stretching, also decline with age.
This loss of collagen and elastin, along with the thinning of the skin, results in a loss of volume and sagging, allowing wrinkles to form more easily.
Genetic Factors and Lifestyle Choices
Our genetics play a significant role in how our skin ages. People with fair skin or certain genetic markers may be more prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles earlier than those with darker skin.
Lifestyle factors like smoking, poor diet, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, and alcohol consumption can accelerate the aging process. For example, smoking damages collagen and reduces blood flow to the skin, contributing to fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the mouth.

Forehead
Wrinkles that appear when raising your eyebrows, typically across the upper forehead.
Between the Eyebrows (Glabellar Lines)
Vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows from repeated facial expressions like squinting or frowning.
Crow’s Feet (Around the Eyes)
These form around the outer corners of the eyes from smiling, squinting, or ageing skin.
Bunny Lines (Nose)
Wrinkles that form across the nose when scrunching it (often called "bunny lines").
Marionette Lines
Lines running from the corners of the mouth down to the chin: These lines can become more pronounced with age and may be treated with injectables or dermal fillers.
Lip Lines
Lines above and around the lips: These are often called smoker’s lines, even in non-smokers, and can be treated to smooth the area.
Jawline (Masseter Muscle)
Wrinkle treatments can be injected into the masseter muscle (the jaw muscle) to reduce jaw clenching, alleviate teeth grinding, and in some cases, slim the jawline.
Chin (Mentalis Muscle)
Wrinkle treatments can treat "dimpled" or "orange peel" chin by relaxing the mentalis muscle, which can improve the appearance of the chin area.
Neck (Platysma Bands)
Wrinkle treatments can be injected into the platysma muscle in the neck to reduce the appearance of vertical neck bands or lines, also called "tech neck”
