VOLUME LOSS
What is volume loss?
Volume loss is the depletion of collagen and elastin, bone and soft tissue. Collagen and elastin keep your skin looking firm and youthful. Bone added a support structure for the soft tissues to adhere too. Ageing reduces the structural supports for our face hence why our appearance changes as we age. This is what can cause our faces to lose volume and cause wrinkles to appear.
FACE CLINIK can help by adding volume back into these areas. They can smooth out wrinkles, folds, and even reduce the appearance of scars from acne or surgery.
Repetitive Facial Movements
Every time we make facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting, or raising our eyebrows, the muscles beneath the skin contract and cause temporary folds. In youth, the skin bounces back after these movements, but with age, the skin becomes less elastic.
Over time, these dynamic wrinkles—such as crow's feet around the eyes, frown lines between the eyebrows, and forehead lines—become more permanent because the skin’s ability to “snap back” is diminished.
Sun Exposure
UV rays from the sun break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Collagen provides the skin with structure and firmness, while elastin helps it maintain its shape and bounce back after movement. As the skin’s collagen and elastin degrade due to UV exposure, the skin loses its firmness and flexibility, making it more prone to wrinkles and sagging.
Sun damage is often the most significant contributing factor to premature aging and fine lines. Without proper sun protection, signs of aging can appear much earlier.
Reduced Skin Elasticity and Collagen Production
As we age, collagen production naturally slows down, beginning as early as our mid-20s. Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure and firmness. Elastin fibers, which help skin snap back into place after stretching, also decline with age.
This loss of collagen and elastin, along with the thinning of the skin, results in a loss of volume and sagging, allowing wrinkles to form more easily.
Genetic Factors and Lifestyle Choices
Our genetics play a significant role in how our skin ages. People with fair skin or certain genetic markers may be more prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles earlier than those with darker skin.
Lifestyle factors like smoking, poor diet, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, and alcohol consumption can accelerate the aging process. For example, smoking damages collagen and reduces blood flow to the skin, contributing to fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the mouth.

What is the most common area we see volume loss?
Volume loss is one of the most requested treatments at our Sydney clinic. The mid-face in particular is a very important area on the face that most patients notice first when they start to age.
Increasing volume can be achieved with particular treatments that we offer at FACE CLINIK. We have an experienced doctor and a number of experienced nurses who utilise techniques to achieve desired outcomes.
Cheeks
Loss of volume in the cheeks can create a flatter or more hollow appearance. Volume replacement restores a fuller, lifted look, enhancing facial balance and providing youthful contours.
Undereyes
Hollows or dark circles under the eyes can make the face appear tired or sunken. Volume replacement smooths this area, reducing the appearance of aging and creating a refreshed look.
Nasolabial Folds (Smile Lines)
The lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth deepen over time. Volume replacement softens these folds, restoring a smoother, more youthful expression
Jawline and Chin
Volume replacement enhances the definition of the jawline and chin, improving facial symmetry and creating a more sculpted appearance. This is particularly beneficial for a receding chin or an undefined jawline.
Temples
Hollowing in the temples can affect facial symmetry and create a sunken look. Volume replacement restores fullness, enhancing balance and achieving a youthful contour
Hands
Aging hands often show thinning skin with prominent veins and bones. Volume replacement adds fullness, reducing visible veins and giving the hands a smoother, younger appearance.
Marionette Lines
Lines extending from the corners of the mouth to the chin can create a sagging appearance. Volume replacement smooths these lines, improving the overall expression.
Marionette Lines
Restoring volume to the lips enhances fullness, symmetry, and shape, improving their appearance for a more youthful and balanced look.
